Sharpsfree, Inc. is a medical product(s) engineering company that designs and markets devices to help reduce the chance of accidental needle-stick injuries by providing a more safe and effective way to dispose of used syringes. The initial focus was to help eliminate those risks currently faced by healthcare employees and waste management workers. The company also recognized the increasing need for efficient and effective disposal methods for those who self inject to manage medical conditions at home. In addition to the simple desire to do something humanitarian, The Company also recognizes that customers have a need for this type of solution, resulting from strict legislation in at least 21 states and the federal government regarding handling of medical biohazards.

With today’s increasing volume of healthcare, coupled with the severity of the types of diseases that may be contracted through blood-borne contact, inadvertent needlestick injuries can have catastrophic consequences and the growing issue continues to receive a large amount of scrutiny.  The prevention of such inadvertent needlestick injuries is a very high priority for several organizations, including the WHO, the CDC, healthcare providers, and healthcare employee organizations, waste management organizations and several professional unions.

The Company has designed and patented an original  “point of care ” automated syringe management product. The SHARPS free ^™SMS-100 Syringe Management System is the only product of its kind available today.  This product is an electronically controlled, event based, mechanical device intended to make the syringe disposal process easier to complete and the syringe destruction, safer and more thorough than competing methods. 

The product has FDA 510K clearance(K001853) and is patent protected in the US, Canada, UK, Europe and Hong Kong. The trade name SHARPS free^™is also registered and is intended for use by this line of products.

Company management expects that new product line extensions will support the needle stick prevention concept, rather than approaching new major functions.  These line extensions may include SMS unit modifications like numbers of different case sizes and designs, varying industrial design concepts, SMS unit support brackets and travel cases, nurse carts, etc.  The Company also realizes the need to continue to have products that have the ability to handle future syringe designs and sizes. There is also ongoing development work that enhances “user monitoring” capabilities.  All of these potential new products will allow the company to penetrate additional markets.  Other customer-perception upgrades as well as manufacturing cost reduction modifications are expected.
